1. Ordinary switch Ordinary switches do not have the power supply function. If you use an ordinary switch (which refers to a switch that does not support POE power supply) to connect a camera, the switch only provides data transmission, and the power supply requires a separate power supply and cable. The price of this general switch is relatively low, but it requires a separate power supply and may have restrictions on the installation position of the camera. Due to the additional work of installing cables and power cables, the overall cost may not be low.
2. Standard POE switch (Power over Ethernet)
A standard POE switch is a safe choice to power your camera and transfer data. A standard POE switch has two connection methods:
The first way: If you use a camera that supports POE supply, you only need to connect it to the switch, no separate power supply is required, and it is simple and safe to operate.
Second way: If you use a normal camera that does not support POE supply, you need to use an isolation cable between the switch and the camera, which will reduce the 48V voltage to a safe voltage required by the camera to transmit data. This is because the camera does not support POE supply, so you need to use an isolation cable to supply power.
3. Non-standard POE switch Non-standard POE switches do not have the function of not detecting whether the device supports POE supply. When you connect the device, it will instantly supply power, which may damage the device. Therefore, non-standard POE switches generally require the use of a network cable and a separation cable. One end of the separation cable reduces the voltage to a safe voltage to supply to the camera, and the other transfers data.
There is also a connection method that uses Shanzhai devices that can withstand a voltage of 24V. This method may be surprising to some extent, but the safety of Shanzhai devices is not guaranteed. We mention this method to warn you to choose Shanzhai devices carefully. Shanzhai devices are unreliable in both safety and after-sales service.
4. 15V non-standard POE switch The last method is a 15V non-standard POE switch, such as the Leike 108SPE non-standard POE switch. When combined with a separator, it can supply power and transmit data. When the separator is connected, the voltage will not have the function of reducing to a safe voltage. Due to power loss during power supply, when the power reaches the camera, the voltage will drop to about 12V, which is a safe voltage for the camera.
As for the separator, it is used to separate the data signal and the power and forward them respectively to the terminal device that does not support POE supply. In applications such as wireless network and surveillance projects, it is common to use different types of switches considering different scenes and costs. However, the standard POE switch is usually the safest, most time-saving and hassle-free choice, and is also economical in terms of overall cost.
