Difference Between H.264 and H.265

Version:

H.265 is a new encoding protocol and an upgrade of H.264. The H.265 standard retains some of the techniques of H.264 and improves some related techniques. The new technology uses advanced techniques to improve the relationship between streams, encoding quality, latency, and algorithm complexity to achieve optimal settings.

Bitrate Reduction:

H.265/HEVC offers more tools to reduce bitrate than H.264/AVC. In terms of encoding unit, H.264 has a fixed size for each macroblock (macroblock/MB), while H.265 has selectable encoding units from 8x8 to 64x64.

Use of new technologies:

The new technology uses advanced techniques to improve the relationship between stream, encoding quality, latency, and algorithm complexity to achieve optimal settings.

Adoption of quadtree division structure of blocks:

The biggest change in H.265 compared to H.264 is the adoption of a quadtree block division structure, which uses an automatic adaptive block division from 64x64 to 8x8 pixels, and employs encoding techniques such as adaptive prediction and transformation based on this block division structure.

Algorithm optimization:

Through algorithm optimization, H.264 is capable of transmitting standard definition digital video at speeds below 1Mbps, while H.265 is capable of transmitting common high definition audio and video at 720P (resolution 1280 x 720) at transfer speeds of 1-2Mbps.

For the same image quality and the same bitrate, H.265 theoretically saves more than 50% of storage space compared to H.264.

Reduce storage space:

H.265/HEVC offers more different tools to reduce bitrate than H.264/AVC. In terms of encoding unit, H.264 has a fixed size for each macroblock (macroblock/MB), but H.265 has selectable encoding units from 8x8 to 64x64. Therefore, for the same image quality, the size of a video encoded with H.265 will be reduced by about 39-44% compared to H.264.
