There are three power supply methods for security cameras, how can you choose wisely?

Three types of security surveillance camera power supply methods, how to choose the right one

At present, the power supply methods for security surveillance cameras mainly include independent supply mode, centralized supply mode, and POE supply mode, and there are four cases of POE supply mode. Do you have a certain understanding of these power supply methods? Next, WEILAILIFEI experts will explain in detail the characteristics and selection principles of these power supply methods, so let's have a look together!

1. Independent supply mode

Independent supply mode refers to installing an independent security monitoring power supply at the front end of each camera, and each power supply only supplies power to one camera.

The benefits of independent supply
1.1 Easy to repair and replace

Each camera has its own independent security monitoring power supply, so if a camera fails, the problem can be quickly identified and resolved. If a problem occurs due to the security monitoring power supply, only the single failed power supply needs to be repaired or replaced.

1.2 Avoiding system-wide outages

Compared with the centralized supply mode, in the independent supply mode, a security surveillance power failure only affects one or more cameras and will not bring down the entire system.

Lack of independent supply
2.1 High cost

The total cost of multiple independent security monitoring power sources is usually higher than a centralized power source of comparable output.

2.2 Susceptible to external damage

The independent security monitoring power supply is usually located close to the camera and is easily affected by external damage factors such as weather, especially in outdoor environments. Therefore, when selecting a dedicated independent security monitoring power supply for outdoor use, you should pay special attention to its protection performance.

2. Centralized supply mode

The centralized supply mode is to connect a 12V centralized power supply to a 220V power supply, then use 2*1.0 red and black power lines to split the power supply to the camera, and the 12V supply distance should not exceed 100 meters. Connect to one single power line connector, and then connect that single power line connector to the power connector of the surveillance camera. The centralized supply method refers to using a 12V switch power supply in the surveillance room or at a specific intermediate point to centrally supply power to the front end. Compared with the independent supply mode, the biggest difference is that one power supply can power multiple cameras. WEILAILIFEI's home wireless solar battery and POE powered security camera is equipped with a unique double WIFI antenna to improve the WIFI signal reception function. After connecting with WIFI, the image is stable and the call can be heard clearly.

Benefits of centralized supply
1.1 Low cost

Centralized supply mode typically uses more cables than independent supply mode, but thanks to the high performance of the centralized power supply, systems using centralized supply mode usually have better cost performance than independent supply mode.

1.2 Easy centralized maintenance

Adopting centralized supply mode makes the cable laying simple, construction simple, and management easy.

1.3 Low overall energy consumption

Actual project cases show that the total energy consumption of a centralized supply system is lower than that of an independent supply system.

Lack of centralized supply
2.1 Initial setup is complicated

The power of the centralized supply is not simply the sum of all the cameras, because the cameras need a large amount of startup current when they are turned on, and the power transfer over a long distance may cause losses. To adopt the centralized supply mode, engineers must have a deep understanding of the entire video surveillance system and make a reasonable plan.

2.2 Possibility of total system outage

If a problem occurs in a centralized supply system that does not use UPS power, the entire system may stop functioning properly and may come to a standstill.

3. POE supply

There are four ways to supply POE:

In this case, the POE switch is directly connected to the wireless AP and network camera that support POE supply through cables. This is one of the simplest methods, but there are two points to note:

Make sure the POE switch and the wireless AP or network camera are both standard POE devices.
Carefully check the specifications of the cable you purchase, and be aware that a poor quality cable may cause the wireless AP or IPC to be unable to power itself or to reboot repeatedly.
In this case where the switch supports POE and the terminal does not support POE, the POE switch is connected to the POE separator through a cable, and the POE separator separates the power and data signals, and outputs power and standard network data signals. The power output line is directly connected to the non-POE terminal through a normal cable, and the data signal output line is connected to the network port of the terminal.

If the switch does not support POE and the terminal supports POE, the POE supply is connected to the POE supply through the cable, and the POE supply adds power to the cable and sends it to the terminal. This case is suitable for expanding the existing wiring network and does not affect the existing network.

In this case, when neither the switch nor the terminal supports POE, the POE supply is connected to the POE supply through a cable, and then the power is sent to the terminal through the POE separator. Case 3 and Case 4 are suitable for the modification of traditional networks and do not affect the original network.

4. Choosing between independent and centralized supply

The advantages and disadvantages of independent supply and centralized supply modes have been roughly explained, but the specific choice depends on the actual installation environment and customer requirements. In general, independent supply is suitable for video surveillance systems with 4 channels or less. For video surveillance systems with 4 channels to 16 channels, it is recommended to choose centralized supply mode when the distance is short. For video surveillance systems with 16 channels or more, multiple channel centralized supply can be adopted by carefully setting the previous period as a prerequisite.

WEILAILIFEI's wireless solar-powered battery-powered camera and monitor set is ranked at the top of the popular security camera set ranking. By choosing the appropriate power supply method according to your actual needs, you can improve the stability and maintainability of your surveillance system and ensure the normal operation of your equipment.
